The Biden administration on Monday gave last approval to a scaled-back model of a controversial fossil-fuel drilling mission in Alaska’s Nationwide Petroleum Reserve — a transfer that’s prone to outrage environmentalists and critics alike.
The so-called Willow Challenge, led by ConocoPhillips, is slated to provide as much as 590 million barrels of oil over its 30-year period, and is conspicuously at odds with Biden’s pledge to transition the U.S. away from planet-warming fossil fuels.
